WORLD OF COAL: We’ve been in love with coal since the 19th Century because it is inexpensive, abundant and supports our electricity-dependent lifestyle. Today coal still powers most of our world, in spite of health and environmental consequences. This is part of coalalovestory.com, which won gold in Large Group Multimedia Project at College Photographer of the Year 2011, and has been selected as a SXSW Interactive Awards Finalist. Motion graphics production and audio editing by Hadley Gustafson.

WYOMING TO CHICAGO: The connection between Wyoming’s coal mines and Chicago’s citizens is stronger than you’d expect. Coal from Wyoming powers a Chicago plant that pollutes the neighborhood around it. While the company that owns Fisk makes a profit from this coal, the air pollution damages the health of people nearby. Motion graphics production and audio editing by Hadley Gustafson.

MOTION GRAPHICS DEMO REEL: This includes segments from my UNC-Chapel Hill MA thesis documentary, Options for Birth (optionsforbirth.wordpress.com), about how choice of birth care provider and environment affect experience; selections from After Effects and Maya classes with Terence Oliver and Alberto Cairo, respectively; and World of Coal, which was created for News21′s coalalovestory.com. The soundtrack was created as my final project for Mark Robinson’s audio production class and includes foley of the ocean. Updated December 2011.

UNDERSTANDING THE CRISIS: http://www.nowwhatargentina.org/story/understanding-the-crisis Argentina experienced an unprecedented economic crisis in 2001. Understand the economic, political and social history that led up to the crisis and how the resilient Argentine people have survived. This interactive feature is part of a larger UNC team project. Design direction and execution, Flash programming, chart production, research and script-writing by Hadley Gustafson.
